Quarantine Queer_Trans Dance Party_ksandara - Kim Sandara.jpg

Kim Sandara

My abstract expressionist paintings explore translations of music to visuals.

Different songs and sounds connect to different levels of emotion; and even in reiteration, brings about new experiences. A song listened to the first time, does not create the exact same experience the second listen. Individual memories of songs change. This creates a large variety of shapes, strokes and color in the paintings. They are made while listening to a continuous playlist of a variety of music genres. The process is synesthetic, action-oriented, stream-of-conscious and most of all a route of escapism previously connected to my queerness and in 2020 more responsive to how the quarantine has changed our lives. Sound has become a bigger way for people to interact, which has led me to interesting experiments like painting sounds while at a queer DJ/drag zoom party.
